What Does a Medical Group Do?

Your physician is probably a member of one or more medical groups.  Doctors across a wide geographic area often come together in medical groups to provide an array of support services to patients.  Your HMO plan relies on medical groups to help coordinate care and handle different administrative tasks.  Take a look at your HMO insurance card.  You’ll see your medical group’s name listed near your doctor’s name.  The choice of medical group can have an impact on the hospitals and specialists you have open access to, the range of health education opportunities provided, the availability of case manager nurses, the use of convenience-based or value-added services and various administrative processes.  You can choose a specific medical group by calling your health plan’s customer service number and expressing a preference.  Otherwise, you may be randomly assigned to a medical group.

Open access refers to UCSF being “in network” for Hill Physicians – San Francisco members for all services. Enrollees who select “Hill Physicians – San Francisco” will have a Hill-affiliated primary care doctor in San Francisco or Daly City. We also offer additional services, which may change from year to year.
