Small Employer Workplace Wellness Programs:
Grants Available!

Don’t let your company’s small size or small budget prevent you from starting a wellness program!

Under the new healthcare reform legislation, there will be a five-year, $200 million program for implementing comprehensive workplace wellness initiatives starting in 2011. Grants will be available to eligible employers who provide their employees with access to a new workplace wellness program. Eligible employers include businesses that employ fewer than 100 employees who work 25 hours or more per week and did not have a workplace wellness program as of March 23, 2010.

To be eligible for the grants, wellness programs must be made available to all employees and include:

  • Criteria related to health awareness including health education, preventive screenings and health risk assessments
  • Efforts to maximize employee engagement
  • Initiatives to change unhealthy behaviors and lifestyle choices
  • A supportive environment at the workplace including workplace policies to promote healthy eating, increased physical activity and improved mental health

Employers may submit applications that include a proposal for a program that meets the criteria and requirements as described in the PPACA and developed by the Secretary. An official application should be available soon from the government. Check back here for a link to this form once it is made public.

Support for Your Affordability and Health Promotion Goals

Not all medical groups are the same.

When a large percentage of a company's workforce chooses Hill Physicians, there can be less of a burden on an employer’s Health Management Program. Hill Physicians automatically provides health and wellness education, preventive care reminders, low-cost nutritional counseling, integrative health, case management and pharmacy utilization advice. These programs are provided at no cost and supplement any resources provided by the plan.

Doctors affiliated with Hill follow evidence-based clinical guidelines and receive on-going, individual measurements for best practices and peer group comparisions.

This feedback, combined with compensation models that rewards clinical performance, creates a push-pull alignment that improves caregiver performance and reduces unnecessary costs.

Each year, 69 million employees take sick days that that cost, on average, $3,000 per worker*. Make sure your benefits package includes one of our partner HMO plans and that your employees have access to information about Hill Physicians.

Help for Small Businesses

Small businesses and tax-exempt organizations with 25 or fewer full time employees may be eligible for a tax credit to help pay for the cost of health insurance.

The small business health care tax credit was included in the Affordable Care Act and is effective this year. The amount of your tax credit will vary based on the average wages paid to full time employees and the tax year being filed.

There is no application process. The business or charity simply files Form 8941 in addition to the regular tax return.

To determine if your company qualifies, use the IRS worksheet here.

Working with Hill

There’s no increase in your administrative complexity. Employees simply designate Hill Physicians as their medical group. Medical group selections can be made during open enrollment or at any point during the year. If you use a third-party administrator (TPA) or benefits company, ask your broker to show you how an employee can indicate their medical group preference or change it.
