Whether you work in an office, a cubicle or a shared counter, what you're surrounded by each day can make a difference in how you feel and how you work.
Here are some tips and tools to give your workspace a "Healthy Makeover":
- Toss, File and Store: Cluttered workspaces = cluttered work days. Take time to organize your files and paperwork and dispose of all non-necessary items. Store everything in drawers, or overhead storage.
- Remove "Accessories": Clear out office toys, calendars and pictures to get back to a clean slate. Only keep those in good shape and with significant meaning.
- Choose a theme: A theme such as zen, outdoors, sports or modern, contemporary or minimalist decor style that best reflects you and your interests or hobbies will surround you with good feelings each time you get to work.
- Lighting: Consider a small lamp for more character and ambient light. It creates a more welcoming space and can help to reduce fatigue.
- Decorate: Place important photos in frames, add back items that fit your new style and consider a healthy plant that thrives with little or no outside sunlight. Position items so that they're viewable but not in your way.

Staying healthy at work isn't always easy. When coworkers are sneezing and coughing around you, it may seem impossible, but if you follow one rule, you'll be less likely to join them:
. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer at your desk. Wash or sanitize each time you cough or sneeze, after using common office equipment, such as copiers or fax machines and any other time your hands feel dirty.
