Selecting a Primary Care Physician

A primary care physician (PCP) is a key member of your healthcare team. Your PCP provides your annual exams, preventive care screenings, handles routine illnesses and most minor injuries, recommends prescription medications and will refer you to specialists and hospitals when necessary.
Your HMO plan will ask you to first choose a medical group and then a PCP from that medical group.

How to Select a Primary Care Physician

Once you have selected Hill Physicians as your medical group, you can choose from hundreds of our affiliated PCPs across Northern California. Look for a doctor that is near your home or work. If you are already with Hill Physicians you can switch to another Hill Physicians PCP at any time. Here's  How to Switch Your Hill Doctor...

Inside each primary care physician’s profile you will see links to more detailed information about how to enroll, including the Enrollment ID Number for your open enrollment forms.

Tips on Choosing the Best PCP for You

As you consider your options for a primary care physician, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • General and family practice doctors are primary care doctors who work with patients of all ages, including children, adults and seniors.
  • Internal medicine doctors are primary care doctors who typically work with adults.
  • Pediatricians are primary care doctors who see only children, from birth through 18 years of age
  • Would you prefer a physician with an office close to your home or close to your office — or both?
  • Do you need a physician who offers extended weekend and/or evening hours?
  • Do you prefer a physician who can accommodate specific language or cultural needs?
  • Do you prefer a male or female physician?
