Herbs Promote Flavor, and Health
Fresh and even dried herbs offer more than just adding zest to your dishes. Adding herbs can actually increase the nutritional value of your meal!
Boost your health with these herbs:
Dill: Not just for pickles, dill is an excellent herb to add to salmon or pork to enhance flavor. Dill contains calcium and low levels of minerals and has been shown to have antibacterial properties.
Oregano: The popular pizza herb is packed with more antioxidants than apples, oranges and nearly 40 common herbs. Studies show that oregano combats aggressive bacteria, possibly preventing infection and even pneumonia. It also might help ward off colitis and colon cancer.
Rosemary: A recent study shows that grilling beef with rosemary can break up cancer-causing agents that form when meat is cooked. The herb might provide a bigger boost to the brain – a potent ingredient in rosemary might protect you from stroke, Alzheimer’s and some of the effects of normal aging.
Sage: Sage is the smart choice for enhancing brain power. Seniors with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s showed marked improvement in cognition after taking sage extract for 16 weeks. And young, healthy volunteers who took sage oil outscored their placebo-taking counterparts on basic memory tests.
Sweet Basil: Basil contains high amounts of Vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting and has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Popular in tomato dishes, it can also add authentic flavor to Asian-inspired dishes.
Thyme: Oil of thyme has been used in perfurmes and medicines. It has been used traditionally to treat respiratory congestion like bronchitis and coughs and has been shown to have antimicrobial effects.
Studies continue on the healing properties of many herbs, and vegetables. Researchers are testing the assumption that herbs and vegetables may contain substances that block the growth of cancer cells and/or help the body's immune system even kill cancer cells.
