Social Study: Apples & Your Heart

An Apple a Day Keeps Heart Disease Away

A study at Oxford University concludes that an apple a day may indeed keep the doctor away by preventing thousands of heart attacks and strokes in British adults over 50 years old. The fruit may be an even more effective preventive measure against cardiovascular disease leading to deaths than prescribed statin medications, according to the findings.

Researchers created a mathematical model to look at the highest causes of vascular death by heart attacks and strokes for adults over 50 in the U.K. population. The model supposed that if 70 percent of the this population started eating an apple a day ( a total of approximately 20 million people) over eight thousand vascular deaths would be prevented. The study further concluded that the side effects from statins, including muscular disease or myopathy and diabetes in over 12,000 individuals, this popular fruit may be a better option.

The final conclusion of the study suggests that is everyone 30 years and older were given either an apple or a statin a day, vascular death rates would drop by 3 percent.
