May is Healthy Vision Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of your eyes — especially if you have a chronic condition, such as diabetes. At Hill Physicians Medical Group, we’re here to help you understand how to protect your vision and prevent long-term complications before they begin.

Why Eye Health Matters

Your eyes are a critical part of your overall health, yet it’s easy to take good vision for granted. Healthy Vision Month is a great reminder to schedule that eye exam, wear your sunglasses and pay attention to any changes in your sight.

Did you know that people with uncontrolled diabetes are at a higher risk for serious vision problems?

The Link Between Diabetes and Vision Loss

When blood sugar levels remain high over time, it can damage the tiny blood vessels in the eyes — especially the retina, the part that helps you see clearly. This can lead to:

  • Diabetic Retinopathy – the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetes
  • Cataracts – clouding of the lens in the eye
  • Glaucoma – increased pressure in the eye that can damage the optic nerve

These conditions can develop slowly and may not cause symptoms right away. That’s why regular eye exams are essential — even if your vision seems fine.

How to Protect Your Vision

Good news: You can take steps today to protect your eyes and reduce your risk of complications.

Here’s how:

  • Keep your blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol under control.
  • Visit your eye doctor at least once a year for a dilated eye exam, especially if you have diabetes.
  • Don’t ignore changes in your vision. Blurry vision, floaters or sudden vision loss should be checked right away.
  • Quit smoking if you smoke — it raises your risk of eye diseases.
  • Wear sunglasses that block UV rays to protect your eyes from sun damage.
  • Eat a balanced diet with leafy greens, fruits and fish high in omega-3s.
