Understanding Diabetes: Observing American Diabetes Month with Hill Physicians Medical Group

November brings American Diabetes Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about a condition affecting millions of Americans. At Hill Physicians Medical Group, we’re committed to helping our patients better understand diabetes, its risks, and how to manage or prevent it. Whether you’re newly diagnosed, managing diabetes, or supporting a loved one, knowledge is your best tool.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition where your body has difficulty regulating blood sugar (glucose). There are three main types:

  • Type 1 Diabetes: An autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin.
Spacing: small
  • Type 2 Diabetes: The most common form, often linked to lifestyle factors, where the body becomes resistant to insulin.
Spacing: small
  • Gestational Diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy and typically resolves after delivery but increases the risk of developing Type 2 later.

Why Awareness Matters

Over 37 million Americans have diabetes, and 96 million adults have prediabetes — a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Alarmingly, most people with prediabetes are unaware they have it. Left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to severe complications like heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and nerve damage.

Preventing or Managing Diabetes

The good news is that lifestyle changes can significantly impact diabetes prevention and management.

  1. Healthy Eating: Focus on balanced meals with plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Limit sugar and processed foods.
  1. Regular Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week to improve insulin sensitivity and maintain a healthy weight.
  1. Routine Screenings: Early detection through regular check-ups can catch prediabetes or diabetes in its early stages.

When people think about diabetes care, they often picture doctor’s visits, lab tests, and medication changes. But for many patients, the person who makes the biggest difference isn’t someone they see in an exam room — it’s the one calling to check in between visits. For Hill Physicians Virtual Clinical Pharmacist Mohini Suchak, PharmD, that in-between space is where the real work happens.

Preventing Burnout: How Your Health Plan and Medical Group Can Support Mental Health

As fall approaches, so does open enrollment — the annual window when you can sign up for health insurance, adjust your current plan or make changes to fit your needs for the coming year. While many people think of open enrollment only in terms of doctors and coverage, it’s also a chance to ensure your plan supports your mental health and overall well-being.

Every October, pink ribbons pop up everywhere signaling Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But behind the symbols are millions of people whose lives have been affected by the disease in one way or another. Awareness isn’t just about ribbons; it’s about conversations, early detection, and making sure everyone has the same access to lifesaving care.
